The Week in Yum July 10-16 A Whole Lot of Netflix Going On

Image
Shack said I look like a Ninja Chef Since I have spent almost the entire week closeted inside my house, fighting off some nasty lung infection, I have nothing to share, in terms of where I went or what I ate so I will share some of the cool stuff I have seen on the internet. Being sick means lots and lots of time on the internet. It also means a ton of Netflix so I worked my way through the Danish series, Rita  which is a crash course on how much more socially advanced the Danish are when it comes to sex, drugs, education and every other issue that North Americans think are too scandalous to discuss with kids. It's clearly a show that a family would watch in the evening - think My So Called Life but with nudity, swearing, pot smoking, rampant drinking, gay teens making out, abortion and chain smoking. Actually, the only backlash this show received in Denmark was about the lead characters constant chain smoking, always right outside the school doors as she greets s...

The Week in Yum June 7-19 Biff's Bistro and Bar Raval, Yonanas and Cooking Up A Storm at Loblaws

Image
tapas lining the bar at Bar Raval Loblaws at 5am is not a sight I'd like to see again soon The week started off with three days in the Loblaw's kitchen. Last Thursday I taught a What's For Dinner class in the afternoon and started prepping for Friday morning's breakfast for 20 of the overnight staff and then came in at 5am to make that happen with the kitchen director, Kira. She stayed all day and night getting everything ready for our Saturday lunch for the 80 daytime employees and I returned on Saturday morning to help get the lunch together and feed almost 100 hungry people. Yonanas   Oh yeah! I had received a Yonanas machine last week when I was on death's door and so it sat, unopened for a week until I felt up to taking it for a test drive. If you live under a rock and haven't heard of this machine, it's a really easy to use machine that turns frozen fruit into, basically, ice cream but without the cream. You shove a couple of frozen...

The Week in Yum June 6-11 My Garden Goes Wild, Fairmount Marker and Some Upcoming Stuff

The only thing thriving this week was my garden. The rain has transformed it into a thing of beauty There was very little yum in my week, my friends. The Kid and I woke up last Friday, sick as dogs, infected with the plague that our own patient zero, Shack, had brought into our home earlier in the week. Before we both totally fell apart, we drove to McDonalds for french fries because the ONLY time that I eat them is when I am too sick to eat anything else. Their crispy, salty goodness is what I crave when I am sick. After polishing off our fries, The Kid and I took to our beds, where we remained for the rest of the weekend. Saturday meant another order of fries and I think that was the only time I even sat up. The kid bounced back by Monday but these things don't work that way with me and so I spent the rest of the week feeling pretty crappy. Not bad enough to stay in bed, but bad enough that I couldn't eat anything other than watermelon and I didn't venture far from t...

The Week in Yum May 15 PcCooking School, The Halal Food Festival, Madjack Apple Lager and how Lolita's Lust Saves the Day

My first vegetable garden in almost 20 years! This was a very low key week, spent gardening, finishing up a recipe for the #GrillWithGrace campaign and just staying close to home. Although, as a makeup artist, I often get to work with celebrities and all that stuff, I rarely get starstruck and when I do, it's often someone who other people don't know. I am a serious director geek and often get more excited over meeting a movie director than the star of the film. With that in mind, I got to work with Stewart Copeland this week, drummer and co founder of a little band called The Police. He also wrote the score for the film, Rumblefish, one of my favourites. The other members of the ensemble were lovely - the beautiful violinist, Yoon Kwon, is not only a ridiculously gifted musician, but I found out she is a blogger too, so you have to go and look at her blog  Yoon Kwon  because it's not everyday that you encounter a true musical master who also writes eloquently ab...
