This was a fabulous Week in Yum, at long last! Lots of great food, birthday boots, a couple new pieces from me online and a trip to Montreal starts today so I am pretty sure next week, there will be even more deliciousness to share.
First up, the Kid is now a grown ass man of 19 years and 11 months and the fruits of my labour are ready to harvest. He has been introducing me to new restaurants, new imbibements (HELLO SORTILAGE) and this week, the restaurant was The
Eat Live Film Cafe in Kensington Market. I have walked by this place a thousand times, since I work at least a couple days a week two blocks away and I have been curious but have never stopped by.

It seems the Kid eats here with his student friends for delicious, reasonably priced for huge portions of Japanese food. He had his regular, the Japanese Curry Poutine, Shack had Teriyaki Chicken Don and we shared the Gyoza. Sadly, I had actually eaten lunch that day and wasn't hungry enough to order my own food but I did thoroughly enjoy a Smoke Marshmallow Hot Chocolate and tasted their food. I will absolutely add this to my list of Kensington Market lunch spots and so should you.

On the way home from a bit of shopping at the Outlet Mall in Niagara, we threw a dart at the list and hit up
The Bull Pit BBQ in St Chatherines. Because we are ridiculous, we didn't order any actual BBQ but I can absolutely vouch for my huge bowl of very tasty chili, Shack's meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a lovely bowl of guacamole with freshly deep fried tortilla chips. Not earth shattering but very good and we will go back and try the BBQ the next time we are in the area.

The meal of the week award goes to
Wynona , a lovely little spot on the most unlikely strip of Gerrard East in Toronto. If you weren't looking for it, you would probably just walk right on by but don't do that. Since it opened it's doors, this place has made every "best of" list in the city and that, sadly, also means you can't just pop in and be guaranteed a seat. We can never really plan ahead so that means that every time we try to go, we can't get in. When a friend asked where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner, I immediately said "Wynona" but was afraid we wouldn't get in so last minute.
Luckily, my friend is also pregnant which means she turns into a pumpkin by 9:30 pm and she made blue hair reservation for 6:15pm. It was nearly empty when we sat down but by 7:15, the place was packed.
The three of us shared two appetizers, a pasta and two mains as well as two desserts - okay, because it was my birthday, I also had a glass of Sauternes with dessert.
Everything was delicious, pasta is hand made daily, both the pork chop and the Branzino were cooked to perfection and the service was attentive and friendly. The place itself if very light and airy and I think it will be amazing once the weather turns warm and they can throw open the huge windows, turning the outward facing bar seats into coveted scores. They don't publish the menu online because it is very fluid, changes with the seasons and what's nice at the market and Sunday is half price wine bottle night. Hurray for delicious food and half price wine!
My favourite find are these little pickled aji amarillo from Farm Boy. We got a Farm Boy in the east end, on Lakeshore and Leslie and if for no other reason, I will keep going back for these bad boys which add a delightful, vinegary, slightly spicy pop of crunch and colour to any salad or cheese board.
