Living Large at Ziggy's Beach Club, Tulum

Ziggy's Beach Club

Tulum has changed so much since I started going there almost 30 years ago. Back then, we rented a palapa on the beach for a couple bucks, slung our hammocks and just hung out on the beach, eating cheap tacos and fried fish to the sound of hippies playing bongos in the sand. Soap was optional.

The beaches of Tulum are pristine and are not as badly plagued with seaweed as the more northern beaches closer to Cancun and Playa del Carmen

Now, Tulum has become this laid back, boho chic beach community that is chock full of eco friendly beach clubs, boutique hotels, shops selling carefully curated and very stylish lounge wear. Even acclaimed Danish chef, Rene Redzepi, opened a pop up restaurant there in 2017.

There are still some affordable places to eat and sleep scattered about Tulum but most of those are in town. The places that line the prime beach front tend to be a bit more on the upscale side, all instagram ready and full of beautiful people, lounging on beautiful beach beds, eating beautiful food.

There is a small parking lot out front of Ziggy's but many people are on bikes
On my last trip, I hired a driver to take us off the resort and show us around as I was with my sister and it was her first visit to Mexico. Can I just say that if you DON'T hire Urhias Pena of TaxiGo to squire you about in his pristine passenger van, you are a crazy person. For the price of one person taking an organized tour to one spot, you get your own private driver and guide for ten hours. Check out my article about TaxiGo on Auburn Lane.

I had thought we would lunch at a place I used to go to but Urhias suggested we go to Ziggy's Beach Club instead and I am so glad he did.

Great food, great service, beautiful beach
Ziggy's is a beach club that is attached to the The Beach Tulum hotel as well as a restaurant so you can either do what we did and just sit at a table, eat a delicious meal and leave OR for $50/pp, you can spend the entire day using the beach club facilities, claim one of their lovely beach beds, use the showers and anything you spend on food and drink will go towards that $50 so, in the end, as long as you spend $50US eating and drinking all day, you get to enjoy the beach too without having to pay $600US plus to stay at the actual hotel.

of course there is a yoga palapa. Tulum is yoga retreat ground zero

The place was laid back, feet in the sand and everyone barefoot with coverups and stylish, oversized sunglasses. Our beer was ice cold, the fish ceviche could have fed four of us and the excellent guacamole was the only great guacamole I ate on the entire trip and at $150MXN

$275 MXN for enough ceviche for 3 or 4 people

My sister order the tequila shrimp tacos ( $290 MXN ) and I managed to destroy about 3/4 of the ceviche even though I had gorged myself on the guac. The fish was fresh, the lime was not overpowering the flavours, it was fresh and tasted like the best of Mexico.

Items on the lunch menu are priced between $150 MXN and $350 MXN with a seafood platter breaking the bank at $900 MXN. Dinner will run you more and breakfast will cost significantly less, as one would expect. Cocktails are $220 MXN and beer is between $60 and $85 MXN so, again, don't go expecting cheap eats, especially Canadians who aren't getting the great exchange rates at the moment, but it's absolutely worth every penny.

The bottom line is that is going to cost the same as a really nice lunch in an a popular, trendy restaurant at home so don't come looking for cheap tacos and tequila but even on a budget, it's a great splurge, especially if you choose to spend the day using the beach club so that your $50 bucks gets you a day on the most beautiful beach in the Riviera Maya.

I haven't been in the evening but I hear the bar is hopping, with lots of live music and all sorts of daily events
