One of my favorite places. Along with Jerash. And, don't get me going on the food. I miss it! It was my favorite posting so far - we're in the Foreign Service so we move every few years. Right now I'm in cold snowy Moscow, which I also love in a certain peculiar way. But I miss Jordan so, so much. We left 6 months ago and I cannot wait to find a reason to go back.Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06950448336879028108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2469160033174145103.post-9504947154449047462014-12-19T01:45:18.508-05:002014-12-19T01:45:18.508-05:00Jabal Amman (rainbow street included) has at least...Jabal Amman (rainbow street included) has at least 6 restaurants that serve alcohol, Downtown has 8-9 restaurants that serve alcohol....
There is also a tattoo parlor in Amman, the only one who happens to have certified tattoo artists, the other ones are so "underground" because not one is experienced or hold a certificate of any kind that allows him to practice tattooing and that's the way it should be.
I couldn't say much about Aqaba because I only went there twice and it's not my favorite place to be.
If you ever come back to Jordan, try talking to the right people because with the numbers of bars and restaurants that serve alcohol you would be able to visit one every day for a period of no less than a month. There's too many resturants in Amman and downtown serve alcohol and no one will ask for your ID to check if you are a Muslim or Christian to serve or sell you alcohol not every muslim is religious same applies on christians or jews all over the world. Anyway what matter is that you enjoyed your time . I just asked one of the people who told me it was illegal and we figured that out. We were working with a large a group of Jordanian Christians who are tattooed and presented it as something that is a bit of an underground scene and the odd Muslim Jordanian who admitted to having them, did them in places where nobody would ever see them and were wary to share that information in the first place.

I also understand that while some Muslims consume alcohol, I was told that this is done in private and in almost two months, this proved to be the case. I will dispute your 50% of restaurants serving alcohol though - Aqaba, which is a huge tourist city, had a small number of restaurants where you could consume alcohol outside of the big hotels. Again, there was a group of more than 30 Canadians who dined out 7 nights a week dying to have a beer with their dinner and they knew every single place where you could do that and each one of those people could count those restaurants on one hand. In Amman, I did not see one restaurant downtown that served alcohol although there was at least one on Rainbow St and, perhaps, in the newer part of town but I stuck to the older downtown area. That doesn't mean they don't exist but the number was certainly much lower than 50%.

I was only in Jordan for 15 days but my husband was working there for a much longer period and was working with a large group of Jordanians as well so I was fortunate to spend my time with actual Jordanians in a non tourist setting. All of my information came from locals and was garnered over multiple discussions over a period of months.

I do not, in any way, think that the lack of tattoo parlours or alcohol in restaurants takes away from what Jordan has to offer and are small things that are interesting to people who are visiting from other countries.

I certainly didn't present these tidbits as a way of deterring visitors because I absolutely loved Jordan and have spent the last two weeks encouraging everyone I encounter to visit themselves. I hope that my enthusiasm for Jordan has been clear to most people who were following my trip.
Again, thank you for your commentsCarole Nelson Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14320316695358896672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2469160033174145103.post-34907988731835325912014-12-18T07:17:49.985-05:002014-12-18T07:17:49.985-05:00Beautifully written, though I don't agree on e...Beautifully written, though I don't agree on everything being a Jordanian, tattoos are not illegal and alcohol is mostly consumed by Muslims , Christians make about 2% of the population and most of them aren't in Jordan or not yet of age to be able to drink alcohol.
Also, 50% of restaurants serve alcohol.
Im curious about the guide you had with you because Jordan has much more to offer.
